ThriftyWholesome2We are super excited to introduce you to the wonderful Johanna, the brains behind Thrifty Wholesome.

For those that don’t know Thrifty Wholesome is a delicious food and lifestyle blog sharing fabulous recipes that are super healthy, super tasty and look down right spectacular!

Johanna’s recipes are a huge hit in our HEAL group so we thought we’d have a chat with her to find out what inspires her.

It’s no secret that we’ve fallen in love with your delicious food posts. Tell us when you first discovered a passion (and clear talent!) for cooking and styling healthy food?

I’ve always loved food but I think it was when I was 14 when my passion for healthy food started. I started researching and trying new recipes in a quest to make family dinners a bit healthier. I was soon in charge of the cooking and it hasn’t changed ever since. Even in my share house now I often cook for all of us and rarely let anyone else into the kitchen!

What does a healthy diet look like for you?

I think it is one of the biggest misconceptions out there, that there is such thing as THE perfect diet. When it comes to healthy eating, I believe that everyone needs to figure out what works best for their body (and also mind).

For me this means eating fresh, unprocessed foods – a good balance of vegetables, fruit, good quality animal products such meat, eggs, fish and dairy and nuts and seeds. But it also means the occasional treat like red wine or dark chocolate. Food should never be the enemy in your life!

What’s for dinner tonight?

Crispy skin salmon with a beetroot-avocado salad and a dijon mustard and dill dressing. Sounds fancy but is super easy to make and one of my go to meals.

Savoury or sweet?

Can I have both? I am thinking banana pancakes (the healthy kind) with bacon.

What’s your philosophy on exercise and what does a workout involve for you?

Just as with diet, I think it’s important to find out what works best for you. There is no point in forcing yourself to complete a half-marathon, if you hate running. Once you found something you like, you’ll find it much easier to stick to it and you’ll even enjoy it rather than seeing it as a chore.

For me it’s all about variety as I get bored quite easily. At the moment I love High Intensity Intervall Training (HIIT) like sprints! They’re super exhausting but I always feel 300% better for it afterwards. I also love yoga, long coastal walks, hiking and cycling.

What does your morning routine look like?

I love mornings, they are my favourite part of the day. I usually don’t set an alarm but wake up naturally at around the same time. If it’s early enough I’d sneak in a yoga class or a HIIT session. Afterwards I’d have a shower, breakfast and then listen to the news whilst I am getting ready for the day.

What’s on your workout playlist?

Oh, I have a very unsophisticated taste in music. That’s why I trust Spotify to provide me with a ‘Discover weekly’ playlist, which never disappoints. For walks I love audiobooks or podcasts. I am currently listening to ‘ABC’s All in the Mind’, ‘How to be Amazing’ or the classic ‘This American Life’.

What do you do to care of you mind?

I love yoga and long walks when I am feeling anxious or stressed.

I also write a lot about my feelings when they become overwhelming. In general I think it’s important to take care of oneself in difficult times.

That can mean eating healthy and regular meals, getting enough sleep, gentle exercise and also spending time with good friends.

What new skill would you love to learn?

Speaking French fluently. I have basic skills but struggle in conversations.

What advice would you give to someone who is trying to improve their health and lifestyle?

Be patient and gentle with yourself.  Make small changes, because over time they’ll add up and you’ll feel amazing. Don’t rush into things or put your body under extreme conditions, it can have all sorts of negative physical as well as mental consequences. Instead aim for a sustainable healthy balance.

We’re super excited to have you creating recipes especially for our HEAL program. Without giving too much away, what can clients expect?

I don’t want to say too much. All I can say is that there will be a bunch of affordable and easy-to-make creations that are healthy and of course super delicious!
